Alabama Men's Initiative
WHO WE ARE:
AMI is a noble cause to galvanize well-meaning men to work alongside women who for decades have been at the forefront of this fight on sexual violence against women. This movement beckoned an alliance with a diverse group of such men who may not be a part of the problem, but desire to be part of the solution.
WHAT WE DO:
At the crux of this mission are men taking the forefront to teach, coach and mentor boys, young men and each other as well as challenge social norms and attitudes that define manhood in our culture and permeate the culture of violence.
WHY WE ARE HERE:
The men involved in AMI may come with different backgrounds and interests, but our common goal is to be change agents by influencing behavior through awareness, education and training. It is important to use a positive approach when working with men and to treat them as prospective allies rather than potential offenders and perpetrators.
- The Alabama Men's Initiative believes it is our primary responsibility to end violence against women and children. Our outreach efforts include
- The adoption of a curriculum for males in K-12 and higher education that address issues of male privilege, masculinity and gender roles.
- Producing an effective media campaign that speaks to the heart and soul of men.
- Joining forces with existing men's organizations across the state. This includes an advisory council for Clergy, Athletic Coaches and Youth.
- Orchestrating an annual conference to train and expand the initiative increasing the participation of well-meaning men, who embrace the reality that men can stop sexual violence.
